BOYS ADRIFT AND GIRLS ON THE EDGE

“BOYS ADRIFT & GIRLS ON THE EDGE”

A must attend event for Parents of boys and girls.

Tuesday 3 August, 7pm-9pm, Methodist Ladies’ College, Hadley Hall

The MLC Parents’ Association 2010 Scholar in Residence program presents an evening with outstanding international psychologist, family physician, and author - Leonard Sax MD PhD.

Leonard Sax is well recognised for his research on gender differences and has published three acclaimed books since 2005; Why Gender Matters (2005); Boys Adrift (2007) and Girls on the Edge (2010)

This presentation will look at the struggle girls and boys face with regards to defining what feminine and masculine mean to them.

His research confirms girls want to know, ‘what does it mean to be a woman?’ Boys want to know, ‘what does it mean to be a man?’ Unfortunately we don't tell them and as a result, the marketplace fills the vacuum, providing "the ready-made masculine and the ready-made feminine" which are caricatures of the real thing. However young people don't recognize them as caricatures, because they have received no guidance.

The result is a growing proportion of girls who are anxious, depressed and tired. And girls who can tell you a great deal about what they do but not so much about who they are.

Likewise, we find a growing proportion of boys who are disengaged not only from school but from the real world. Those boys are comfortable in the virtual world, where they play their online video games, and/or surf the net for photographs of girls.

This presentation will help parents understand these problems and provide practical solutions that can be put in place today.
