Seminar Description:
In older age, the physical body asserts itself dramatically, demanding attention, provoking alarm and disorienting our sense of ourselves. Psychoanalysis, however, has yet to probe the experience of living in an aging body. Analytic writings on aging rarely mention the body, while those on the body-in-treatment scarcely address aging. I argue that we must focus more intently on bodily self-awareness in our work with older patients–– the patient’s, the analyst’s and ours together.
