Happy as Lazzaro - (Rated M) Italian Movie Night - Sat 15th May presented by the Lions Club of Myrtleford 6pm doors open - movie starts 7p.m
Lazzaro … Lazzaro …" is the familiar refrain among the farmhands of rural Italy, in Alice Rohrwacher's fable-like film, winner of Best Screenplay at Cannes 2018.
Within the dilapidated, bulb-lit rooms of over-populated households, and under the cool sheaths of sun-lit tobacco leaves, everyone's calling out for Lazzaro (Adriano Tardiolo), the cherubic, putty-faced protagonist of Happy as Lazzaro.
In the field, he's called upon to gather everyone's tobacco leaves; in the house, he's expected to carry around the ailing matriarch; at the chicken pen, he's asked to guard the hens, all night, from a lone wolf that's been haunting the town.
Lazzaro doesn't seem to mind — in fact, he gazes at his fellow humans with such a startling, extreme sense of good-naturedness that it transforms him into something of a saintly caricature.
