About the Confucius Institute
The Confucius Institute at UWA links Western Australians with Chinese language, Chinese culture and Chinese people. We offer language and cultural awareness tuition all year round, and present a wide range of workshops and cultural events. Our Chinese teachers and volunteers provide classroom support for more than 25 primary and secondary schools in Perth and Bunbury.
We are a partnership between UWA and the Chinese International Education Foundation. In 2005, we became the first Confucius Institute to be established in Australia. We are located at UWA's historic Claremont campus.
Our Courses
Courses are structured into two semesters with a break in the middle coinciding with WA school holidays. There are 18 classes in each semester.
This course structure aligns our program more closely with international language learning systems (see Which level below for details).
When: Semester 2 commences the week beginning Monday 19 July, 2021. Classes run for 9 weeks until 17 September, then after 3 weeks' break, Semester 2, another 9 weeks run from 11 October to 10 December.
Morning classes are held from 10am to 12 noon. Evening classes are held from 6:30–8:30pm.
Minimum enrolment numbers are required to run each class. A full refund will be made if the class cannot run due to low enrolments.
Where : Classes are held at the UWA Claremont Campus.
Which level : Our class levels are Beginners, Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced. There are two semesters in each level, with an optional third semester focused on consolidating what has been learned and developing literacy.
Students may choose to progress to the next level after 2 semesters if they feel confident with the material. This will usually mean they have put in extra hours of study between classes. Others may feel that 18 months is a more achievable time frame to embed the knowledge and may prefer to take the Consolidation option. The Consolidation courses will also be useful for students with some knowledge of Chinese, or who are returning to Chinese study after a long break. Please contact us if you are interested in this Consolidation option.
