Impromptu Schubert. Franz Schubert’s Four Impromptus, D.935 (Op 142). Composed in December 1827 having just completed another set of four impromptus (D. 899) in the same year —all possibly as pieces for himself to play at musical soirées. The word ‘impromptu’ suggests spontaneity. We can imagine Schubert creating these works as he extemporised at the keyboard but, in fact, their formal structure and sophistication suggests considerable thought & are amongst Schubert’s most-loved works for piano
