SKFF'22 A Day of First Peoples' Film, Music and Conversation
About
Just over 20 years ago writer/director/filmmaker and proud Arrernte and Kalkadoon woman Rachel Perkins (Total Control, Radiance, Bran Nue Dae, Mabo and Jasper Jones) released the short musical drama film – One Night the Moon. Starring heavyweights of the film and music industry Kaarin Fairfax, Paul Kelly, Kelton Pell, the late Ruby Hunter, Memphis Kelly, Chris Haywood and David Field; the film went on to win critical acclaim both in Australia and internationally – collecting numerous awards along the way.
Written by Rachel Perkins and John Romeril, the film was based on based on the true story of Aboriginal Tracker Riley in Dubbo. Set in the 1930s Australian outback, a young girl goes missing in the night. The local police advise the parents use the highly skilled local Aboriginal tracker, but the father is insistent that 'no blackfella is to set foot on my land'. A line search destroys much of the trace – with the tracker looking on helplessly. Wanting answers, the mother goes to the tracker to find the truth.
With Rachel and Producer Aanya Whitehead’s blessing, the St Kilda Film Festival is enormously proud to present a special afternoon of talk, music, film, drinks and projections in St Kilda's legendary Gershwin Room at the equally legendary Esplanade Hotel. To kick off this packed day it gives us great pleasure to present a unique opportunity to hear and meet with one of Australia's most esteemed and well known First Nations actors, singers and performers, Kelton Pell (The Heights, The Circuit, Redfern Now and Cloudstreet, Blackfellas, Australian Rules, Bran Nue Day, Mad Bastards, Red Dog and the forthcoming feature, The Crossing). This special “in conversation with” event will include a rare screening of Rachel Perkins’ unique and ground-breaking work One Night the Moon and other secret snippets.
In addition, we will present a curated showcase of First Impressions performances. First Impressions is a career development and mentoring program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander musicians that the City of Port Phillip and Creative Victoria have jointly funded.
The bar will be open, the conversation flowing, and the volume turned up, so how can you resist joining us for this one-of-a kind and personal exploration of music, cinema and culture.
