The Australasian Recorder Competition 2023
as part of the Australasian Recorder Festival held in Armidale NSW

FINALS: January 6th 2023
Please read the regulations and the details before applying. The final stages of the Competition will be held in Armidale NSW on the 6 January 2023. In order to be part of the finals candidates must be enrolled and partake in the Orpheus Music Australasian Recorder Festival 2023.
The aim of the competition is to offer performance opportunities to the participants of the competition, including prize money, with the jury made up of international and national recorder professionals. REGULATIONS
1. STRUCTURE OF THE COMPETITION
The competition is structured in two main stages: PRESELECTION and FINAL.
1.1 All candidates selected for the finals must be enrolled in the Orpheus Music Australasian Recorder Festival 2023 located in Armidale NSW Australia, and must be present when the competition results are announced on the 6 of January 2023.
1.2 The PRESELECTION stage: Orpheus Music will be accepting Video Auditions from the 1 of July 2022 and these must be submitted no later than 1 of October 2022. Trybooking link coming soon.
It will consist of a recorded video with selected works. The Jury will announce the finalists on the 15 of October.
Please check the criteria in section 3 and 4 for details regarding the videos and the repertoire category for the selected works.
1.3 The FINAL stage will be held on the 6 of January 2022, Armidale NSW Australia. It will consist of a live performance in front of the Jury and will be open to the public.
1.4 Orpheus Music administration will determine the order in which the competitors perform with consideration of piano accompaniment and the number of candidates.
All decisions taken by the Orpheus Music administrators are final and irrevocable. There will be no correspondence about these decisions.
2. SECTIONS
The competition is organized into two main sections: solo recorder (with accompaniment) and recorder ensemble. This competition is open to recorder players of any age above age 5.
Solo Recorder
2.1 Solo Recorder – 12 and under*
2.2 Solo Recorder – 18 and under*
2.3 Solo Recorder – Open Section
Recorder Ensemble
2.4 Recorder Ensemble - Ages 18 and under*
2.5 Recorder Ensemble - Open Section
*Note for 18 and under and 12 and under– your age is as of the 6 of January 2023.
2.4 Recorder Ensemble - 18 and under
2.4.1 This section is open to any recorder ensemble from quartet (4 separate parts) onwards. Any combination of recorders.
2.4.2 Players in the ensemble must be under the age of 18. However, one player is allowed to be up to 19 years old as of the 6th January.
2.4.3 The whole ensemble must be enrolled in the Orpheus Music Festival 2023 in order to participate. **
2.5 Recorder Ensemble - Open Section
2.5.1 This section is open to any recorder ensemble from quartet onwards. Any combination of recorders.
2.5.2 Open to any age.
2.5.3 The ensemble must be enrolled in the Orpheus Music Australasian Festival 2023 in order to participate.**
** Financial concerns. If you want to participate in the competition and therefore the festival and your financial situation is a barrier for you to do so, please consider options of financial support through your community, recorder society, school and also contact us as we may be able to help as well though our bursary programme.

4. VIDEO DETAILS - Preselection Stage
4.1 The aim of the video recording is to illustrate to the jury the candidate’s musicality, skills and technique.
4.2 The video recording must have visual and audio components and must be recorded in one go without any video editing. Video applications must be recorded from one angle that doesn't change, without video stops between movements or selections, and with no edits whatsoever.
4.4 The video recording must include the recordings detailed in the repertoire section of this document.
4.5 All video files must be sent to alex@orpheusmusic.com.au using Google Drive or Dropbox.
4.6 Candidates younger than 18 years of age will require a parent and/or legal guardian to sign the application form and to give Orpheus Music media permission.

5. JURY
5.1 The Jury will be composed of a selection of national and/or international recorder professionals from Orpheus Music Australasian Festival 2023.
5.2 The Jury may choose 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize in each section, or may choose not to do so.
5.3 The Jury may award as many honourable mentions as they like.
5.4 All decisions taken by the judging panel are final and irrevocable.
There will be no correspondence about the judges’ decisions.
5.5 In the finals, the Jury has the right to interrupt any performance that exceeds the time limits.
5.6 Criteria for adjudication are based on a holistic and inclusive approach, open-mindedness within the above-mentioned rules, and without predetermined expectations nor biases of any type, musical or otherwise.
5.7 Orpheus Music advocates and promotes inclusive practices. We do not discriminate on the basis of racial or ethnic background, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, national origin, or disability.

7. APPLICATION
7.1 The Video recording must be sent by 12:00 pm GMT 1st of October 2022 to
7.1.1 Candidates under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian sign the Orpheus Music media statement below.
SOLO Section
7.2 to get registered the solo candidates must send the following documents exclusively by email:

Filled in and signed application form and emailed to alex@orpheusmusic.com.au.

Upload video recording to Dropbox and send the link via email. If you don't have Dropbox, you may upload to Google Drive and email the link.

Email payment receipt of the application fee. The application fee of $25 must be received prior to 1 of October 2022. Your application will not be considered complete until the fee is received.

If under age of 18 a signed permission by parent/caregiver of Orpheus Music Media statement.

IF a candidate is selected for the finals you will be asked to then submit:

Email one photograph per person (headshot) JPEG file if in solo section. (Only necessary if over the age of 18).

Email a biography, 100 words maximum as a Word Doc. This may be used for promotion of your work and performance. (Only necessary if over the age of 18).
ENSEMBLE Section
7.3 to get registered the ensemble director/conductor or leader must send the following documents exclusively by email:

Filled in and signed application form and emailed to alex@orpheusmusic.com.au.

Upload video to Dropbox and send the link via email. If you don't have Dropbox, you may upload to Google Drive and email the link.

Optional ensemble group ensemble photograph may be sent.

Optional email a biography of the ensemble, 100 words maximum as a Word Doc.

Email payment receipt of the application fee The application fee of $50 must be received prior to 1 of October 2022. Your application will not be considered complete until the fee is received. Note for the ensemble section the application fee is only once, not per member.

If any ensemble members are under age of 18, it is the group’s leader/conductor to organize a signed permission of a Orpheus Music

8. APPLICATION FEES
8.1 Solo Recorder players $25 for the application.
8.2 Ensembles: $50 for the group.
Email alex@orpheusmusic.com.au after you've paid the application fee so that we can track it; please include the candidate's name, email address, and method of payment.
Your application fee supports Orpheus Music Recorder Competition including administrative costs, adjudication, PR, future planning, and educational programs. Prizes are underwritten by generous Orpheus Music donors.
9. PAYMENT is to be completed through Trybookings.
9.1 The registration fee is non-refundable, unless the competition is cancelled.
10. COPYRIGHT AND FINAL PROVISIONS
10.1 The competition is a musical event that will be recorded and may be broadcasted on the web and other media. By submitting their application the competitors authorize the directors of the competition to the use of their image either through photographs and audio / video that can be broadcasted via radio, television and other media (internet, etc.).
10.2 When submitting their application the candidates authorize Orpheus Music to use their name and image in online and printed publications related to the competition and organization.
10.3 The application and participation fee will not be refunded for any reason, except for the cancellation of the competition by Orpheus Music.
10.4 With the submission of the registration, the candidate agrees to the rules and regulations of the competition.
10.5 All winners (of any prize) will be listed on various social media platforms by Orpheus Music.
