Handel’s Messiah
Online bookings have now closed, but tickets will be available for purchase at the door.
Handel was more than a composer of classical hits – he was also a humanitarian who raised astonishing amounts for his favourite cause, London’s Foundling Hospital. Each year from 1749 until his death, he gave a benefit concert, which from 1750 was a performance of his celebrated oratorio Messiah. These Foundling Hospital performances of the work played a huge role in establishing its ongoing popularity, and inspiring the many groups around the world who present it annually. This year’s performance by the Bach Society of Queensland honours the roots of this beloved tradition, presenting Messiah as it was heard in the Foundling Hospital Chapel, and a portion of proceeds will be donated to The Smith Family, which, in the same spirit as the Foundling Hospital, aims to create opportunities for disadvantaged children.
