Monday Nights 6-9 pm

This series is broken into two sections.

Block 1: Suzuki Foundations (weeks 1-5)
Block 2: Devising and development showing (weeks 6-15)

Block 1: Suzuki foundations.

Learn the fundamentals of the Suzuki Method of Actor Training.

Created by Japanese Director Tadashi Suzuki, this rigorous method trains the actors' breath, stillness, center of gravity, and “grammar of the feet” to build a grounded and powerful stage presence.

What to expect:

*Sweat, discipline, and ensemble training
*Building of stamina, focus, imagination, and awareness of your body in space
*A shared physical language where we can begin to devise from
*To learn the basic center of gravity exercises, the 10 walks, statues, stomping, and slow ten.
*In the last half hour of class, we put our training into practice, slowly developing and cultivating material for the development showing later in the year. (You do not need to commit to the whole 15 weeks to be a part of the 5-week foundations)

Block 2: Devising and Development showing
(If you are new to the Suzuki technique, you must complete the 5-week foundations to participate in Block 2)

Drawing from the foundational techniques we have learned, along with text analysis, vocal work, and devising practices, we work towards a developmental showing of scene six from Bertolt Brecht's Mother Courage. Devising on this piece began in previous training blocks,

The process so far has reimagined Mother Courage's Scene six through the eyes of those history forgot - the unnamed peasants who died fleeing the Thirty Years’ War. In the afterlife, their spirits are restless and questioning, each still carrying the one object they took when they fled: objects. Together these objects become the cart, and these ghosts become Mother Courage - replaying the scene to uncover its truths and hypocrisies for themselves and for the audience.

The development showing will happen in the last class. The showing consists of training and the Mother Courage performance. The showing is not aimed at being a fully polished performance but as a sharing and celebration of the process. Participants are welcome to invite friends and family along.
