THE JOURNEY - DAY BY DAY
DAY 1 · 3 October - Naples: Arrival & Immersion
We leave Rome by private transfer and arrive in Naples late morning. Check-in, then the city begins.
The afternoon takes us along Spaccanapoli, the ancient spine of the city, straight as a blade through baroque churches, artisan workshops and centuries of layered history. Lunch is a pizza a portafoglio, eaten standing up, as Neapolitans have done for generations.
In the late afternoon, we visit the Cappella Sansevero, home to the Cristo Velato by Sanmartino, one of the most extraordinary sculptures in the world. A marble veil so fine it seems impossible. Followed by a private gallery of contemporary Neapolitan artists: the same creative energy, expressed in the language of today.
The evening belongs to the Lungomare, Naples' most beautiful promenade, with Vesuvius on the horizon and the Castel dell'Ovo reflected in the sea. Dinner at a seafood restaurant on the Riviera di Chiaia.
DAY 2 · 4 October - Naples: The Soul of the Quartieri · Departure for Cilento
The last morning in Naples is the one that stays with you.
We begin with a proper Neapolitan breakfast at a historic bar - sfogliatella, cornetto al limone, espresso. And the caffè sospeso: a tradition born in these streets, where you pay for your coffee and leave one for someone who can't. A small gesture that says everything about this city.
Then the Quartieri Spagnoli: narrow alleys, votive shrines, laundry overhead. With our local host, we walk through hidden churches, the iconic Maradona mural, the courtyard of Fondazione FOQUS - a former monastery now alive with schools and cultural projects for the young people of the quarter - and Vico Totò, an open-air gallery of murals dedicated to the great icons of Neapolitan culture.
Lunch at a neighbourhood trattoria. Then private transfer south to Sapri, along the coast. The landscape changes. The pace drops. Cilento begins.
Arrival in Sapri, a quiet fishing village on the Gulf of Policastro, framed by mountains and sea. Check-in.
Dinner at a local cantina - local wines, produce from the land, flavours that speak of an ancient and carefully tended agriculture. The first real taste of what Cilento does best: honest, generous, deeply rooted food.
DAY 3 · 5 October — The Sea You Didn't Expect
There are famous Italian coastlines, and then there is this one: wild, silent, UNESCO-protected, and only reachable by boat.
We set sail from Sapri towards Punta Infreschi: white rock coves, water that shifts from emerald to turquoise, the kind of silence you forget exists. Lunch on board with local produce. The afternoon is free: swim, read, watch the coastline pass.
In the evening, dinner back in Sapri with the flavours of the territory: Menaica anchovies fished with ancient nets, buffalo mozzarella, local extra virgin olive oil, homemade bread. A table that tells the story of this land better than any guidebook.
DAY 4 · 6 October - Inside the National Park
Cilento is not only sea. Behind the coast lies a National Park: ancient woodland, stone villages, hidden waterfalls and silences that are felt rather than heard.
The morning is a walk through the park to the Cascate dei Capelli di Venere, a waterfall that falls over a wall of brilliant green moss, in a landscape that seems suspended in another time. Lunch with the flavours of the Cilento hinterland.
In the afternoon, we return to Sapri for something unexpected: a tasting of award-winning artisan gelato at Crivella, made with ingredients from the territory. Followed by an informal conversation with the Ambassadors of the Mediterranean Diet. The Cilento is the place where Ancel Keys first identified the benefits of this way of eating in the 1950s. It is a recognised Blue Zone, where people live long because they eat well, move through the world gently, and stay together. Not a lecture. A conversation around a table.
DAY 5 · 7 October - Maratea & the Final Evening
The last full day takes us just across the border into Basilicata, to one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
Maratea: the fishing harbour, the ancient hilltop village, and the Cristo Redentore, a monumental statue overlooking the gulf that few outside Italy know exists, and that stops everyone who sees it. Lunch at the harbour, with the sea a few steps away.
On the way back, the Cilento Skywalk: a panoramic walkway suspended above the coast, where the Gulf of Policastro opens below like a painting.
The final evening is the one no one wants to rush. Dinner at the hotel around a long table, local wine, and live traditional folk music. The sounds of the south as a farewell that doesn't feel like one.
DAY 6 · 8 October — Departure
Breakfast, farewells, and private transfer back to Rome.
Cilento is a place you leave slowly. You depart carrying something that isn't in your luggage: a different rhythm, a new familiarity with an Italy that has always existed, and that few ever have the privilege of truly finding.
This is what ViviLocal Journeys is for.
