Historical Hand Stitching

For thousands of years, clothing was stitched entirely by hand, and there were ingenious and often quick ways of sewing that created beautiful, structured garments made to last. However, many of these techniques couldn’t be replicated by sewing machines, leading to the simplification of clothing construction and eventually to the fast fashion of today.
In this hands-on workshop led by dress historian Bronwyn Clarke, participants will learn and sew samples of historical stitches including the Mantua Makers seam, a fully enclosed seam using only one row of stitching; the English Stitch, a very clever way to join two lined pieces with just one row of stitching; piped facings; and cartridge pleating. Many of these techniques can be added to contemporary sewing for innovative and stylish elements.
Fabrics will be supplied; please bring a sewing kit of needles, thread, and small scissors.
