Manual Handling Equipment Masterclass

Ceiling hoists play a critical role in promoting safety, independence, dignity, and sustainable care within SDA housing. This session explores the clinical reasoning behind ceiling hoist prescription, including track configurations, transfer goals, environmental considerations, and participant outcomes. Through practical SDA-focused scenarios, participants will strengthen their confidence in prescribing ceiling hoist systems that support both participant function and caregiver safety. 

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the role and functional benefits of ceiling hoist systems within SDA and high-support living environments.  

  • Explore different ceiling hoist configurations, track designs, and transfer applications. 

  • Strengthen clinical reasoning skills when prescribing ceiling hoist systems, considering participant mobility, transfer needs, caregiver support, environmental layout, and long-term functional outcomes. 

This session is tailored for Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, and allied health clinicians supporting NDIS participants with complex mobility and transfer needs, particularly those working within SDA, and high physical support environments.

Crystal Chan, BHSc (OT), is Unicare Health’s Focused Educator in Bathroom Mobility Solutions. She delivers clinical training that empowers therapists to prescribe, script and customise equipment confidently. Crystal specialises in modifications and overcoming spatial limitations, creating practical bathroom solutions that enhance independence and support a wide range of client needs.

Customer Relations Manager

Sam Dartnall is a ceiling hoist and disability projects specialist with over 18 years’ experience at Unicare. He specialises in fit-out solutions for SDA housing, aged care homes, hospitals, and complex care environments, with additional expertise in aquatic mobility solutions that enhance accessibility, independence, and quality of life for clients.
