About
About
International Peace Day is celebrated worldwide on 21st September.
Peace is more than the absence of war; it is the foundation necessary to collectively tackle humanity’s challenges. It is the lived experience of safety, dignity, opportunities and cooperation in our daily lives. This year’s International Day of Peace honours the 'everyday architects of peace'—people driving local action, laying the groundwork for stability, and building a lasting peace from the ground up.
With the topic of “Peace - For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day?”, this webinar has speakers who will take a critical approach to the notion of “Peace” from different perspectives.
Guest Speaker Introductions:
Isao Mizuno
From the Tokyo Tobihino Rotary Club. Mr Mizuno is a former Rotary International Director (2024-2026) and has played a significant leadership role in Rotary's global peace initiatives, including serving as the Rotary Peace Centers Committee Liaison and as a member of the Rotary Peace Centers Host Area Coordinators Committee.
Drawing on more than eight years of involvement with Rotary's peace programs, Mr Mizuno will share his personal reflections on what peace has come to mean to him and the important role organisations and individuals play in building peace within communities and across nations.
Dr Ehklas Nasser
We are also delighted to welcome Dr Ehklas Nasser from the Sudanese Australian Welfare Association (SAH WA). Dr Nasser brings first-hand insight into the challenges faced by communities affected by the ongoing conflict in Sudan and the support provided to Sudanese Australians living abroad.
Her presentation will explore the work of SAH WA in responding to the humanitarian impacts of the conflict, both internationally and within Australian communities, highlighting the role of community organisations in promoting resilience, support, and peace.
Maia Ihemeji
We are also pleased to welcome Maia Ihemeji, a Rotary Peace Fellow and graduate of the Rotary Peace Certificate Program at Makerere University.
Maia's work has focused on peacebuilding and conflict resolution, and today she will share her experiences as a Peace Fellow along with insights into conflict and peacebuilding efforts in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Her perspective provides a powerful reminder of both the challenges and opportunities involved in building lasting peace.
Terry Lui
Our final speaker is Terry Lui, Past President of the Rotary Club of Poai, Taiwan.
A long-standing Rotarian and community leader, Terry brings a unique perspective shaped by Taiwan's history, culture, and place within the broader Asia-Pacific region. Drawing on his leadership experience and community engagement, Terry will offer reflections on what peace means from a Taiwanese perspective, exploring how resilience, cooperation, mutual understanding, and strong community connections contribute to peace and stability in everyday life.
