About
Where does energy come from, and how does it end up lighting a globe or powering a toy? Over ten weeks, our young scientists follow energy from its source to the switch. We start with the Sun, where all energy begins, using solar toys and glow-in-the-dark stations. Then we look at how the Sun's energy drives wind and water, and test windmill blades to catch it. Children discover how plants "catch" sunlight and pass that energy along the food chain to us. With wind-up toys and come-back cans, they find out how energy can be stored and turned into movement. In the second half of the term the focus moves to electricity. Children act out the flow of electrons in an "electron dance", make a lemon battery, and learn why a circuit has to be closed for electricity to flow. They also generate their own power with hand-crank generators and build working circuits with snap kits. Every session is hands-on and play-based, links to the Early Years Learning Framework (V2.0), and builds curiosity, prediction and early scientific thinking.
