KG2014 SYDNEY FORUM
As part of a nationwide initiative, Kultour will be in Sydney facilitating a series of conceptual laboratories for artists and arts workers engaged with the cultural and linguistically diverse arts space today. The KG2014 program builds upon our 2013 national gathering pilot program and the associated public forum presented as the prelude to the Australian performing arts market – Long Paddock Brisbane.
"At the Melbourne gathering, all twelve artists and practitioners, four provocateurs and Kultour staff were in the room because we wanted to reflect upon the history and meaning of multicultural arts beyond food and folk festivals. Kane Forbes, Manager of Performing Arts Touring at Regional Arts Victoria and one of the provocateurs said, “Often diversity is talked about in abstract ways as a problem”. At the industry session and public forum, discussion and debate arose as to the meaning of a ‘Western canon’. Furthermore, what constitutes ‘great art’, but also, importantly who dominates the production, creation and representation of ‘great art’ in Australia?" - KG2014 Participant
This special initiative is focussed on
- contributing to the development of the practices of culturally and linguistically diverse artists in relation to contemporary, multidisciplinary arts in Australia;
- developing the profile of innovative, culturally diverse Australian art; and
- gathering information to support Kultour’s advocacy to the broader Australian cultural sector on the potential, the value and the significance of culturally diverse arts practice.
