Intro to the Late Effects of Polio

Due to unforseen circumstances, this event did not go ahead. We apologise for any inconvenience.

We are now delighted, however, to have partnered with Rotary District 9685
(one of two Districts covering the Sydney metropolitan area) to present a series of
FREE Clinical Practice Workshops in their area.

Description

Currently, there is a paucity of health professionals who can recognise and effectively manage the Late Effects of Polio (LEoP). This introductory clinical development workshop "The Late Effects of Polio - Chapter 2 in the Polio Story" will facilitate greater awareness of this little understood condition, and increase clinician efficacy to address the care needs of an estimated 400,000 Australians who may now be experiencing new polio symptoms and a host of co-morbidities as they age.

EARN 2.5 CPD POINTS FOR THIS WORKSHOP

In coming years, its effects will become more understood and better treated as polio survivors around the world age, and begin to experience the Late Effects of Polio (LEoP) and Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS). Australia is at the forefront of raising awareness amongst health professionals of the best assessment and care methods for clients now living the second chapter of the poliomyelitis story for our polio survivors, and for those who are still contracting the disease in the global community.

Whilst there are many cross-overs in the treatment and management of other chronic diseases and the management of LEoP, there are also some very significant differences.  If LEoP is not identified, the client can experience rapidly worsening symptoms due to inadvertently incorrect care.

Workshop Format

This 2.5 hour workshop will cover the following topics in an interactive, relaxed format:

·         Why We Vaccinate: a brief history of polio in Australia

·         Demystifying Late Effects of Polio and Post-Polio Syndrome: what’s the difference?

·         The Aging Polio Population:  joining the dots of problems experienced in LEoP /PPS clients

·         “Did You Have Polio?”:  identifying people who may be experiencing  LEoP / PPS

MORNING TEA BREAK – 20 mins

·         A Holistic Approach to Care: referring to allied health & specialists, lifestyle management

·         To Brace or Not to Brace?: Clint Nielsen of Orthotic Solutions Queensland

·         A Late Effects of Polio Case Study:  Q&A with local polio survivor and team care simulation

Quality Education

Workshops offered by Polio Australia are developed and driven by best-practice research emerging from Europe and the USA.  I am a holistic Registered Nurse and will be facilitating the workshop, with vital contributions by our ‘lived experience expert’ polio survivor, and polio orthotic specialist Clint Nielsen.
Polio Australia wishes to build a complement of skilled and knowledgeable ‘polio’ practitioners across many different modalities around Australia to further increase awareness and standardise care provision for polio survivors.

As such, attendees will complete a short assessment at the conclusion of the event and receive a certificate of attendance and earn 2.5 CPD hours.  After completing this training you may also choose to be nominated as a preferred ‘LEoP Practitioner’ on the Polio Australia health practitioner directory on the Polio Health website.

Clinical Practice Resource

As a thank you for attending, and to further your education, we have also made available a complementary downloadable copy of Polio Australia’s clinical resource launched at Parliament House in Canberra in October 2014: “The Late Effects of Polio: Managing Muscles and Mobility”.

The manual is a fantastic ‘go to’ resource for any health professionals who are already working with LEoP clients, and for those who wish to improve their working knowledge and clinical efficacy for managing different chronic conditions.
