Fronted by acclaimed saxophonist Matthew Ottignon, local outfit Mister Ott exhibits a strong ‘Ethiojazz’ influence as cultivated by musicians like Mulatu Astatke and Getatchew Mekurya.
Ottignon’s band marries mesmerising eastern sounds and hypnotic dance grooves with groove-heavy funk. The band’s first album ‘Drop It Like It’s Ott’ - a high caliber instrumental record that crosses world music with jazz, funk and Ethiopian music - was released in April 2015.
“Ottignon's tenor and baritone saxophones intermittently blaze like bush fires through rhythmic thickets” John Shand,SMH
“The mysterious burst of sonic energy that is Mister Ott is infectious.” Lucy Kiely,Megaphone Oz
