Why does a Jazz singer need voice training?

Jazz is an aural art form and genre encompassing many styles including Swing, Blues, Ballad, Latin, Be-Bop, Lounge, East Coast, West Coast, Afro-Cuban, and Brazilian. Personal interpretation or improvisation, spontaneity and originality are inherent in playing all Jazz repertoire.

For a singer to manage all of the nuances of the Jazz style they first need to develop a strong and reliable vocal technique including a wide vocal range, range of vocal colours, effective breath management for rhythmic articulation and vocal flexibility for freedom of improvisation.

Dr Irene Bartlett is Coordinator of Contemporary Voice and Vocal Pedagogy at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University where her teaching centres on the development of foundational technique, sustainable vocal health and performance excellence for both undergraduate and postgraduate singers. Irene is a past Australian Master Teacher for the Australian National Association of Teachers of Singing and a consultant to tertiary contemporary voice programmes internationally. Her students work as professional singers in both national and international contexts, and are recipients of prestigious awards including multiple Arias and major industry grants/fellowships. In addition to her pedagogical work, Irene has an enduring career as a professional contemporary vocalist.
