BLOOD BROTHERS

A family friendly comedy with a little drama

The Play
by Willy Russell

Directed by Catherine Steer

If you have never heard the story of the Johnstone twins, where “one was kept and one given way”, then you must see this play. It tells the story of twins separated at birth because their working-class mother, Mrs Johnstone cannot afford to keep both of them. One twin, Mickey, was brought up in poverty in a working class environment with a caring, tolerant, natural mother with a superstitious mind and the other, Eddy, in wealthy circumstances by a selfish, neurotic, snobbish middle-class mother, Mrs Lyons.

Even though these mothers try to keep them apart, the twins end up being the best of friends not knowing of their relationship to each other until the end. The poor twin is friendly, uneducated and scruffy whilst the well-off twin is lonely but educated.

It is a great story following these two boys through their growth to manhood and observing the class differences in their up-bringing and attitudes that were prevalent from the 60’s to the 80’s. Society went through massive changes in this period. Each twin, and indeed all children, were influenced by the music, film and fantasy of this period.

Don’t miss this one. It is a tale which you should hear and let unfold before you.
