Types of membership

There are two membership categories offered by AMWA.

  1. Ordinary membership is open to any person who is a medical writer, journalist or editor in the media, including specialist publications, except a person whose sole work is directed to the promotion of a product or commercial organisations.
  2. Affiliate membership is open to any person who supports the aims of the association but who is not eligible for Ordinary membership or students and retirees who choose the discount.

Ordinary member

Eligibility: Any person whose main writing is as a medical writer, journalist or editor in any media, including specialist publications and online publications, EXCEPT those whose sole writing is promotional (see ‘Affiliate’).

Types of writing: Medical/health journalism, Technical writing, Academic writing, Journal editor

Employment: self-employed/freelance, health/medical publisher, academic publisher, government department, university, health peak body

Ordinary member entitlements:

Ordinary membership entitles you to:

  • Free listing on the Freelance section of the AMWA website
  • Access to the AMWA Mentor Program
  • Access to the AMWA PDP certificate
  • Discounted rates for the annual AMWA conference, workshops and seminars
  • Regular e-mail broadcasts a bimonthly e-newsletter  
  • AMWA Facebook group membership

Affiliate member

Eligibility: Any person who supports the aims of the association, but who is not eligible for the Ordinary Member category.

This includes writers whose sole work is directed to the promotion of a product or a commercial organisation, and full-time students or retirees.

Affiliate membership entitles you to receive the AMWA newsletter and email broadcasts and to receive discounts for the annual AMWA conference, workshops and seminars.
