Bendigo Easter Fair or Maldon - Sunday 16th April 2017

Due to lack of bookings, this tour has been cancelled. Booked passengers will be contacted by Steamrail Staff with further information.

Join Steamrail as we head to Bendigo for a day at the Bendigo Easter Festival or change trains at Castlemaine and travel on the branch line to historic Maldon.

There is much to see and do for the whole family at the Bendigo Easter Festival. Watch the Gala Parade, be entertained by roving street performers, visit the Rotary Art and Craft market or art gallery, be enthralled by the Goldfields library story telling tree, have fun at the Fun Zone on the rides, ride the vintage tram, wander around and admire the grandeur of the ‘gold era’ buildings or have a quiet lunch at one of the many fine hotels and cafes.

Sit back in your comfortable seat and enjoy the scenery or relax in Club Cars Moorabool or Hobsons Bay and enjoy morning tea as our classic diesels roar through tunnels and across the viaducts and bluestone bridges. On arrival at Bendigo there is four hours to explore. After a full day out, sit back in your comfortable 1920s or 1940s carriage or relax in the Club Cars with a snack, tea, coffee or some light refreshments as we head back to Melbourne. The trip is also a rare chance to travel behind a historic A Class diesel and relax in one of our 1920s or 1940s express passenger carriages. The A Class diesels were rebuilt from B Class diesels in the early 1980s and are nearing retirement. The B Class diesels date back to 1952-1956 and are historically significant as they were the first mainline diesels introduced in Victoria. Their success contributed to the rapid decline in steam.

On arrival at Castlemaine Station, cross the platform, step back in time to the 1950s and board a steam train bound for the historic town of Maldon. Travel first class in the luxurious Macedon and Tambo carriages or Excursion Class.
After travelling at a slow relaxed pace through Box Iron Bark forests and gold country arrive at Maldon – a town from early last century. There is two hours to explore the town with its quaint shops and cottage gardens and lunch at one of the hotels, cafes or bakeries before boarding the steam train back to Castlemaine. There is time at Castlemaine to visit the station’s tea room and enjoy a coffee and a snack as passengers did 50 years ago or inspect the signal box on the platform.
Our on train facilities include a kiosk, which stocks a wide range of light refreshments, sandwiches souvenirs and hot and cold drinks. A licenced bar will also be opened serving a range of wine and beer and spirits. *
