  • The WIRED Lab introduces Jessie Ford AS PART OF THE WIRED OPEN LABS WORKSHOP SERIES 2017. Jessie, OF Fjord Illustration sPECIALISES IN watercolour paintings and graphite or ink pet portraits. 

  • Enjoy a day of observing and recording nature in all it’s beautiful detail!

    This one day workshop welcomes all levels from beginners to advanced in learning how to draw and paint in botanical art.

  • In this 6 hour workshop you will learn:

  • Drawing your subject and transferring it onto watercolour paper
    Tonal rendering using pencil
    asic colour mixing and theory
    Watercolour techniques including wet-in-wet, dry brush and glazing

Who Should Attend?

Introductory class suitable for both complete beginners and those with some prior drawing and watercolour experience.

What You'll Get

Each attendee will leave this session both with new work, and having learnt techniques and theories of watercolour painting and botanical drawing.

What To Bring?

BYO refreshments, there are cafes nearby.

While some materials are provided, it is preferred that participants bring their own materials where possible.

Materials List

  • Pencils: 2H, HB and 2B
  • Soft kneadable eraser
  • Watercolour paper: 300gsm smooth/hot press paper. Arches, Saunders, Fabriano, Strathmore or Bockingford are good brands
  • Brushes: Round in size 2 and 6. Sable or synthetic
  • Watercolour paints: Arts Spectrum, Windsor & Newton, Lucas, Holbein, Schminke, Rowney, Rembrandt Artist quality paints are good brands
    Tubes or paints in the following colours:
    Three cool primary colours such as: Lemon yellow, Permanent Rose and Cerulean blue
    Three warm primary colours such as: Winsor Yellow Deep, Cadmium red and Cobalt
    Optional extra colours: Yellow ochre, Burnt Umber, Paynes Grey
  • Extra Materials
    Old tea towel, annel, or paper towels
    2 jars for water
    White plate or paint palette

ABOUT Jessie

Originally from rural NSW, Jessie Ford is a Melbourne based artist who works under the name of Fjord Illustration. She specialises in watercolour paintings and graphite or ink pet portraits.

Since completing her bachelor of illustration, she has exhibited in numerous group exhibitions and most recently her solo exhibition, ‘Leaf’, in Melbourne. Jessie’s Tasmanian art residency on Flinders Island led her to receive the Highly Commended Award during the ReFraming Nature exhibition at the Royal Botanical Gardens in 2015. She now runs workshops, sharing her joy of art and the natural world with her community.
