WORKSHOP OUTLINE
Participants will experience hands-on, practical STEAM activities and be taken through a step-by-step process to plan STEAM units using The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority’s (QCAA) Design and Technologies Curriculum.

FLOW OF THE WORKSHOP
The Importance of STEAM and Design Thinking
 
The day will begin with an introduction to the fast-moving, global world we aim to prepare our students for. Through videos and discussions, we will examine and identify the skills, dispositions and knowledge needed to operate successfully in a changing landscape. Using this background as a springboard, we will explore and discuss the importance of STEAM, design thinking and the design process, and undertake a short, hands-on activity using design thinking to solve a problem.

Experiencing STEAM - Primary 
During our next session, we will experience a hands-on STEAM challenge to highlight the importance of collaboration, the iterative nature of the design thinking process, and the role of teachers as facilitators. At the end of this session you will have clarity about what elements lead to authentic, engaging STEAM activities and what approaches and models work and why. .

Design and Technology Curriculum Planning – Primary
The final part of the workshop will involve what you can do simply and differently in your curriculum and what changes you can make to address the Technologies curriculum. We will discuss the common belief that STEAM is an “extra add on” and show how to authentically adapt what you are already doing in the classroom to address the curriculum requirements. You will have an opportunity to plan against the Technologies Curriculum and leave with a raft of ideas of how you can begin to infuse these new approaches into the current school curriculum.
