Series Details

A three part series for smaller and medium sized business looking to grow into larger practices. This series gives people skills and processes to analyse their business, plan an approach to growth and methods on how to sustain changes and thrive.

Our suggestion is to either bring your whole leadership team – so you can make decisions together as we work through the process - or bring a combination of a knowledgeable employee and a decision maker. Each of the series have the individual sessions spaced about a month apart with the intent that the participants can return to the practice, have conversations and start to either implement or plan to implement the strategies and skills gained.

Join us, and at the very least, come away with the knowledge of how to think strategically. We hope that you actually soak up the advice and valuable processes to enable you make decisions, transform your business and instil sustainable change for a profitable business.


Session 1 detail – Business Strategy and Growth - 15 August, 9am - 11am

Learning Outcomes 
People will be able to:

  • undertake a high-level analysis of their business in its current situation
  • understand what a strategic plan is compared with a business plan, the process of generating a strategic plan and the value it brings to company performance
  • have a framework for beginning the strategic planning process, that will define business performance in 5 years
  • understand some key processes and issues involved in growing a practice
  • use the advice, tools and processes discussed in the session and apply to their own practice development

  • Overview of growth planning options
  • Key factors to finding the right people to assist with growing a business (selecting appropriate consultants)
  • Strategies and options when considering where to grow (international, interstate or state; typology or complexity of projects)
  • Strategies and options when considering how to grow (merging / creating formal connections / expanding practice individually)

Paula McCarthy – Director, Working Dynamics 

Working Dynamics is a consultancy that helps architectural firms perform better. Consulting to many of Australia and New Zealand's leading architects and designers, Working Dynamics provides services ranging through strategic business planning, process innovation, business systems and analysis, profit and productivity acceleration, sales and marketing to leadership and team development. Working Dynamics is led by director, Paula McCarthy, a management consultant who is also an architect by background.  For our workshops, Paula will provide participants with a roadmap for effective strategic planning, explaining key opportunities and issues to address for for best results. 

 

Session 2 detail – Business Planning: Delivering Your Strategy - 12 September, 9am - 11am

Learning Outcome
People will be able to:

  • identify options to progress and understand the hidden processes and time components related to implementing these options.

Key content

  • How to go about implementing technical aspects considering the issues, challenges or hurdles that may arise
  • Essential components to address (dependant on nature of the change – project typology, business focus, state/national/international growth)
  • How to get the most out of engaging consultants, outsourcing workload and creating or maintaining partnerships
  • Understanding organisational structure and effects on workforce

Simon Knott – Director, BKK

Simon Knott is a founding director of BKK Architects. Simon has extensive experience in Architecture and Urban Design on a broad range of projects for government, institutional, commercial, retail and residential clients. Beyond practice he has tutored design and technology subjects at RMIT University; Over 10 years he was the co-host of a weekly architectural program, ‘The Architects’ for radio station 3RRR; He has co-hosted radio and TV shows for the ABC.

 

Paula McCarthy – Director, Working Dynamics

  • describe how they will manage ongoing change
  • understand how to create systems to enable agile responses from business, processes and people

Key content 

  • identify methods and strategies of how to keep new processes and recent business changes going
  • discussion of how to cope with growth and decline of staff numbers and the methods of dealing with fluctuations in workforce
  • looking at a wider view of change management practices in your workplace and how to get the best from people and processes
