Philosophy in the City: A workshop series for kids

a series of five philosophy workshops

for children aged 8 – 10

10:30am – 12:30pm on five Sundays:  24/09/17,  1/10/17,  8/10/17,  15/10/17,  22/10/17

Enrolled children will attend all five workshops.

Kids aged 8 – 10 are invited to come and share the wonder, creativity and exchange of ideas at the heart of philosophical enquiry. This series of small-group workshops will help kids think deeply and tackle big questions through story, discussion and playful expression.

1) Who’s the Boss of Me? (Sunday 24th September, 10:30am – 12:30pm)

A workshop about free will. Are there forces that control us – and can we resist them? Do we each have our own destiny, or is that something we can shape through our choices?

2) When Things Start To Think (Sunday 1st October, 10:30am – 12:30pm)

A workshop about natural and artificial intelligence. What sorts of things have minds? Can machines think and feel? Could a robot ever be a person?

3) A Charmed Life (Sunday 8th October, 10:30am – 12:30pm)

A workshop about being lucky. Can you choose to feel lucky? Would you rather live in a predictable world, or in a world of chance? What kind of world do we live in?

4) My Cousin, the Ape (Sunday 15th October, 10:30am – 12:30pm)

A workshop about evolution. How did life begin? How closely related are we to other primates? Where does nature end and culture begin?

5) Where’s My Jetpack? (Sunday 22nd October, 10:30am – 12:30pm)

A workshop about the future. Can you imagine a perfect human being? Could we ever achieve a perfect world – and what would it look like? Are we headed for utopia or dystopia?
