Chris Norman & James Kelly Castlemaine Concert

hero
World-renowned musicians playing traditional music of Ireland, Scotland and Maritime Canada will return to Castlemaine for the 2nd time, presenting a delightful and fun concert.

Flute-player Chris Norman is one of the foremost tradition bearers playing the music of Maritime Canada: dances, airs and songs from Nova Scotia, Acadia and Quebec as well as roots music of Scotland, Ireland, Brittany, and the U.S.A. Chris’ playing brings forth music bursting to life, leaving audiences with a deeper appreciation of how traditional music sings across the centuries with timeless beauty, wit, and vitality. Chris’ playing appears on the Soundtrack of the Oscar winning film Titanic, as well as numerous editions of the Swoon compilation CDs issued by the ABC in Australia.

James Kelly, a native of Ireland, is one of the greatest Irish traditional fiddlers alive today. James has toured Europe, the US, Canada and South America as a member of several influential Irish groups, including Patrick Street and the legendary folk group Planxty. James was the TG4 Irish traditional musician of the year, having been awarded the Gradam Ceoil TG4 2006 Irish Musician of the Year award in recognition of his outstanding musicianship and contributions to Irish music (TG4 is Ireland's Irish-language TV station). He has 18 albums to his credit. "… As a virtuoso violinist and exponent of Irish traditional music, James ranks among the very best in Ireland today." Tony MacMahon, Senior Producer, Radio Telefis Eireann

Chris and James will be joined by Rennie Pearson, a multi-instrumentalist based in Golden Bay, NZ specializing in flutes, whistles, vocals and DADGAD tuned guitar. With a firm footing in Irish music, Rennie has delved into the musical traditions of Scotland and Canada, as well as ancient classical music from India. He performs regularly as part of the Duo Polytropos.

The tour is made possible with support from Culture Ireland.
