PG005 Chinese Language Courses Semester 1 - 2018
About the Confucius Institute
The Confucius Institute at the University of Western Australia is a non-profit organisation dedicated to strengthening educational ties between China and Australia, supporting Chinese language education and increasing mutual understanding between both nations.
In 2005, we became the first Confucius Institute to be established in Australia. We now form part of a worldwide network of 500 sister institutes across 138 nations.
We are making some changes to our Chinese Language Program in 2018. These will provide greater continuity of learning for students as well as offering options to consolidate what has been learned and focus on reading and writing.
We will offer two intakes per year instead of four, aligning with University semesters. Each semester will involve two terms of nine weeks with a break in the middle aligned to WA school holidays. There will be 18 classes in each course.
We are also optimising the course structure to reduce the number of different levels and align more closely with international language learning systems (see Which Level below for details).
When: Intake 1 classes commence from Monday 29 January 2018. Intake 2 classes commence from Monday 16 July 2018.
Evening classes are held from 6:30–8:30pm. Morning classes are held from 10am to 12 noon.
Minimum enrolment numbers are required to run each class. A full refund will be made if the class cannot run due to low enrolments.
Where : All classes are held at the UWA Claremont Campus
Which level : From 2108 our class levels will be Beginners, Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced. There will be two semesters in each level, with an optional third semester focused on consolidating what has been learned and developing literacy.
Students may choose to progress to the next level after 2 semesters if they feel confident with the material. This will usually mean they have put in extra hours of study between classes. Others may feel that 18 months is a more achievable time frame to embed the knowledge and will take the Consolidation option. The Consolidation courses will also be useful for students with some knowledge of Chinese, or who are returning to Chinese study after a long break.
