Bach and Others

Bach: Mass in G, Sanctus BWV 239, & Kyrie from Cantata BWV 142
Marcello: Oboe Concerto in C minor
Handel: Duets from Messiah
Oboe soloist: Leanne Glover
Concert accompanied by Perth Baroque Orchestra

Bach's brilliant choral writing is well known to music lovers throughout the world. His wonderful Mass in G is no exception to this. To the regular listener it presents like a cantata with a combination of arias, duets and choruses. In addition to the mass, the concert will feature a mix of further Bach choral music, including his Sanctus BWV 239 and Kyrie from Cantata Ein feste Burg.

In contrast to the musical richness and profundity of Bach, we turn to some of Handel’s most melodic duets from Messiah.

In addition, as a foil to the choral works, the hauntingly beautiful Marcello Oboe Concert in C minor will be included in the programme. Come join us for an uplifting and inspiring Sunday afternoon in one of these two outstanding venues.

Swoons Concert - a Lighter Touch

So much glorious music has been written for choirs that it’s hard to select just a few pieces for one concert. But responding to demand we will include some of your favourites such as Fauré’s In paradisium from his Requiem, Lacrimosa from the Mozart Requiem and Schubert’s Heilig, Heilig, Heilig, along with Ešenvalds’ new ethereal work The New Moon for unaccompanied 12 part choir and 6 tuned wineglasses which will be a total revelation to most listeners. In contrast to these gentle works the pace will be lifted with along with highlights from the Broadway musicals Porgy & Bess, West Side Story and My Fair Lady.

The second half of the concert will present some of the best songs from the jazz repertoire….Blue Skies, Mack the Knife, I Got Rhythm, and It Don’t Mean a Thing, to name a few, complete with a small jazz band and soloist.

Sunday August 12th – 2.30 venue Christ Church Grammar School Chapel

Perth Philharmonic Orchestra

November 11th this year commemorates the centenary, to the very day, of the end of the First World War. Following PSC’s long tradition of ANZAC concerts, we will mark this significant occasion with a performance on Remembrance Day of the Fauré Requiem and Vaughan Williams’ Dona nobis pacem with relevant narration and projections to deepen the meaning of the music’s texts and the day’s significance.

This will be a performance that will move everyone present and help us mark the day with respect and gratitude.

Sunday 11th November 4.00pm - Perth Concert Hall

Soloists include: Greta Bradman [Soprano] and Robert Macfarlane [Tenor].
Perth Baroque Orchestra led by Paul Wright.

The wonders of this glorious oratorio are made almost endless when directed by Perth’s own brilliant choral director Margaret Pride OAM. Exquisite arias such as I Know My Redeemeth Liveth and Rejoice! are contrasted with the majesty of arias like Trumpet Shall Sound and Thus Saith the Lord.

The real genius of this work however is revealed in the great choruses sung to perfection in baroque style by Perth Symphonic Chorus, and accompanied by our very own nationally recognised Perth Baroque Orchestra led by the exceptional violinist Paul Wright.

Saturday 22nd December 7.30pm Perth Concert Hall
