Gold Coast Ramble - Malaria Vaccine
There are currently 198 million cases of malaria across 109 different countries. Of the 600,000 sufferers who die each year, 80 per cent are young children who are simply not strong enough to fight off the killer parasite. Across the world malaria remains a major killer of children under the five years old, taking the life of a child every two minutes. Imagine the difference an effective malaria vaccine would make.
Rotary has partnered with the Institute of Glycomics at Griffith University to raise $500,000, which will enable clinical trial evaluation using a larger sample of malaria naive human volunteers to show that the vaccine actually works; that is, that PlasProtecT® can protect people from malaria infection.
