Start Sailing

If you loved your Try Sailing then its time for a more extensive 2-day beginners course. By the time you've completed the two days you will be feeling comfortable aboard a yacht and able to respond with confidence to basic sailing tasks.

How does it work?

You'll start your learning even before you step on the boat with a safety briefing for novices. Our approach emphasizes fun and safety in sailing and most people will agree you can't have one without the other.  We use a miniature version of a cruising keelboat called a Columbia 22 to get you started. It has all the features and layout of its bigger relatives without the intimidation and raw power.  With a large, fully enclosed cockpit and plenty of room below, you'll get the feeling and reassurance which comes from sailing a regular cruising boat rather than its similar small sporting cousins.  All our boats have had substantial refit and upgrade work to ensure they are sturdy, safe and up to date.  Boasting new rigging, the latest in B&G electronics, autopilot when needed and LED lighting for night work you'll be right at home from the first moment aboard.  You'll even get a cuppa, hot from the galley.

What will we be learning?

Our two day course is packed with sailing knowledge and the chance to improve your hands on experience.  You'll participate in all boat preparation, operation, mooring and sailing activities including -

  • Safety aboard, MOB recovery and the chain of command.
  • Clothing and lifejackets.
  • Parts of the boat, terminology, rigging.
  • Sail handling - hoisting, trimming, use of the winch, reefing, dropping, folding and stowing.
  • Knots - the two basic knots that will make you a crew member.
  • Steering - all points of the wind, basic wind awareness.
  • Weather - whether or not to go sailing :)
  • Boat layout and where to find things ... and where to put them away!
  • Mooring and un-mooring - the ultimate in crew work.
  • Rules of the road and avoiding other boats - why everyone has a role.

Never a dull moment - our previous new crew have been know to say, "I'm fine for now can we just sail for a while".

The program for each day will vary according to the weather conditions so be prepared to be flexible.

Enthusiasm and the correct clothing according to the weather. Please be aware of your sensativity to motion sickness and take the necessary precautions.
