Arts Law & You 2
Arts Law & You 2
Arts West and Western Edge Youth Arts are pleased to present two workshops on Copyright/Intellectual Property and Community Engagement and how they impact the independent and small to medium Arts Sector. Delivered by Arts Law Australia, this series of workshops will build on our previously presented Arts, Law & You event held in 2017 where we looked briefly at Contracts; Copyright & IP; Artists Collaborations; and Privacy & Data Laws. Attendee feedback from our previous event showed a strong interest in delving deeper into Copyright and Intellectual Property with particular attention on how they work in today’s online environment and working with culturally diverse communities.
While open to any artist interested in learning more about these topics, the aim of these workshops is to provide an accessible Professional Development opportunity for culturally and linguistically diverse artists, small to medium arts organisations, Students of Arts and Culture related courses and other interested Artists in Melbourne’s Western suburbs.

10am – 1:30pm: Protecting, respecting, selling & promoting your Art:
Everyone knows something about copyright – you’ve seen the little © around, and you know it probably relates to your practice. Let’s delve into that space together, with the Arts Law Centre, and learn about what copyright is, how to protect it, how to sell or license it, and what to look out for in terms and conditions. This session will also look at creativity in the social media space and what to know about the legal issues there – yes, that’s right, there are legal issues there. And as a special prize for attending, everyone gets an Arts Law booklet to take home.
2:30pm – 6pm: Community engagement and the law:
Community engagement workers and culturally and linguistically diverse cultural practitioners work in a space where promoting cultural respect is key, art is often made by many, projects evolve, funding is insecure and people are engaged on a project to project basis. This can introduce some interesting and tricky legal issues – let’s talk about them. In this session, Arts Law will present a seminar on the issues and then we will workshop them with a few practical examples.
This event is proudly supported by Maribyrnong City Council and our venue partner, VU at MetroWest.
