Maldon Experience - Saturday 8th September 2018

Join Steamrail as we head for the historic goldfields town of Maldon. This steam train will take you back to the time when it was possible to “change trains” at Castlemaine for a branch line trip to Maldon.
The train will depart from Southern Cross and stop at Sunshine to pick up passengers. Our two steam locomotives R711 and R761 will work hard as we experience the glory of the “Main Line” with its many viaducts, hills, tunnels and hand built bluestone bridges. Once at Castlemaine you may like to explore the heritage signal cabin on the station, before departing for Maldon.
This branch line is now the Victorian Goldfields Railway (VGR). Over many years, the scenic route was lovingly rebuilt, once again linking the historic gold towns of Castlemaine and Maldon, through the beautiful Box-Ironbark forest in a region that once saw some of the richest gold mining in Australia. In Maldon, you can admire the quaint shop fronts and cottage gardens, pause to enjoy a Devonshire tea or hot soup or browse in the antique shops. The smell of wood smoke in the air evokes the comforting cheer of the open fire.
For those who choose this option, you must change trains at Castlemaine to travel on to Maldon. Plenty of cafes, hotels and bakeries are available in the main street to purchase some lunch.
At Castlemaine, stay on board the train as it travels to Bendigo for servicing. You will arrive in Bendigo at 11.58am and depart for Melbourne at 4.30pm. There is a lot to see and do in Bendigo.
Steamrail Victoria has organised Two Bendigo Tour Options that you may like to consider.  If you select one of these options,  you will be picked up by coach at the Bendigo station and taken to the  Central Deborah Gold Mine where you will eat ‘Tiddy Oggie’ lunch at the mine. There are two organised options you can do after lunch:
(maximum 20 people - bookings closed 3/09/2018) – Join the 1:00 pm Mine Experience Tour, then catch the 2.30 pm Talking Tram for a full round-trip bringing you back to the mine. You will then board the coach back to Bendigo station to meet the train.
(maximum 20 people - bookings closed 3/09/2018) – Join the 1:00 pm Vintage Talking Tram to the historic tram depot. Enjoy a depot tour then catch the 1.55 pm Talking Tram to the Joss House. After exploring here catch the 3.05 pm Talking Tram back to the Gold Mine. You will then board the coach back to Bendigo station to meet the train.

FIRST CLASS OPTION ( Melbourne to Castlemaine & on the Victorian Goldfields Railway to Maldon)
Maybe you would like the experience of First Class travel and service. This includes lunch at the Maldon Hotel and VGR’s first class carriages Tambo and Macedon. You also receive a glass of wine and nibbles. This luxury option is limited to 48 people, so book early to avoid disappointment.
Castlemaine to Bendigo & Return
Residents of Castlemaine and District have the rare opportunity to catch a Steam Train at Castlemaine and journey to Bendigo.  The train will depart Castlemaine at 11:07 am.
Upon arrival in Bendigo at 11:58 am they have plenty of time to do their own thing or perhaps undertake one of the Bendigo Tours (see above).
The Return journey from Bendigo to Castlemaine gets underway at 4:30 pm for an arrival in Castlemaine at 5:17 pm.
When booking for this journey, please click on the Select button alongside "Departing Castlemaine 11:07 AM".
Our on-train facilities include a kiosk, which stocks a wide range of light refreshments, sandwiches, souvenirs, hot and cold drinks.
