Be Heard: The Art of Podcasting

Audio podcasts are one of the most accessible and popular mediums for modern storytellers. If you have always wanted to create your own podcast, our Be Heard: The Art of Podcasting workshop is the perfect way to start.

Run by acclaimed podcaster and producer James Milsom, you’ll learn hands-on recording and editing techniques to develop a high-quality podcast that will engage your prospective audience.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the first session of this workshop will no longer be held on Saturday 20 October. Instead, the workshop will begin on Saturday 3 November. 

WHEN: 3 x 3hr sessions. Saturdays 3, 10 and 17 November, 1pm – 4pm.

Workshop content:

Week 1
Introduction to podcasts / listening party – What is a podcast, who listens, how can they be used for good not evil? Lots of excerpts from podcasts, critical listening and analysis as precursor to creating our own.

Tech – Brief introduction to different kinds of mics, how to record – not too loud, not too soft, blocking wind and room noise, etc. Then practical – recording interviews in small groups / pairs, then play back and critique / discuss.

Week 2
Interviewing – Interviewing techniques, ethics and approach.

Story – How to structure a story and different approaches to storytelling (linear narrative vs non-linear and different styles of podcasts).

Week 3
Editing and mixing – How to edit volume, levels, basic effects and cleaning audio, mixing and preparing for publication.

Publishing and promotion – How to get your podcast out into the world and promote your podcast to target audiences.
