Out-of-Control-Sexual-Behaviours - LCN

There is great debate around the topic of out-of-control sexual behaviour.  Out-of-control sexual behaviour can include sex and porn addictions, compulsive sexual behaviours, or any sexual behaviour a client deems to be problematic and/or impacting on the daily function of the client’s life.

In this workshop participants explore definitional issues of out-of-control sexual behaviour, including the debate of the existence of addictions or not.  The definitional position a therapist takes informs the intervention chosen.  Participants will explore the social construction of sexual problems, especially behaviours like hyper sexuality, high porn use, and chronic masturbation.  Participants will also explore out-of-control sexual behaviours from a cognitive, behavioural, neurobiological, and developmental-dynamic perspective.

Therapeutic interventions and treatment options will also be explored.  Cognitive-behavioural interventions, neuroplasticity reprogramming, as well as existential therapeutic and solution-focussed approaches are explored.  Time will be offered for case conceptualisation and development of treatment plans.

At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Critique the definitional issues of out-of-control sexual behaviours;
  • Distinguish between theoretical approaches to understanding out-of-control sexual behaviours;
  • Evaluate treatment options based on client presentation;
  • Integrate treatment options for out-of-control sexual behaviours in practise (treatment planning); and
  • Understand the role of personal values in working with out-of-control sexual behaviours (self in therapy/therapeutic self).
