Meet the Author: Alice Nelson

Please join us to hear award-winning author, Alice Nelson, talking about her beautiful new novel The Children's House at 6pm on Wednesday 5th December at Matilda Bookshop. We absolutely loved Alice's book, a staff favourite, and we know that you will too. She'll be in conversation with our very own, Molly Murn, chatting about The Children's House, and all things books and writing.
In startlingly poetic writing, The Children's House, interweaves a story of two women, Rwandan refugee, Constance, and Gypsy scholar, Marina. Both live in Harlem, both are dealing with their own separate traumas, and when their paths cross, neither will realise the significance of what's at stake, until both their lives are transformed. Based closely on Alice's personal experiences, including a friendship with a Rwandan refugee, The Children’s House is a study of trauma in families and societies - the primal wound of not being mothered adequately, and the ripples through generations.

Alice Nelson lived and worked in the brownstone on 120th Street, Harlem, in which The Children’s House is set. While studying in New York she worked at a non-profit agency run by an order of nuns as a case worker with refugee and undocumented migrant families. Alice was named one of the Sydney Morning Herald’s Best Young Australian Novelists for her first novel, The Last Sky. Her short fiction, essays and reviews have appeared in publications such as the Sydney Review of Books, the Asia Literary Review, Southerly and the West Australian.

Tickets are $8 and include a glass of wine and cheese.

For this night only The Children's House will be available for the special price of $24.99 (normally $33). Signed copies will be available.
