EmAGN Forum – Architectural Education

EmAGN Forum presents...

Architectural education – does it prepare you? And how do you fill the gaps?

Over the past two years the EmAGN Forum has covered topics to shed light on how to progress your careers, what are the skills to communicate, advocate and win work. But, for the last forum of the year we reflected back to where it all began. Our architectural education. Does it really prepare you for work? And is there a way to fill the gaps? What was the best subject you completed that helped you the most at university for your role as an architect?

Alarmingly, the most recent graduate survey conducted by the Australian Institute of Architects reported that of the 470 respondents, 85% felt that they were not adequately prepared for the architectural profession.

It begs the questions – Is university meant to prepare you as a design thinker? Or should there be more practical subjects – technical drawing, documentation, business acumen that should help students prepare for the workforce?
A big topic to address, and we hope to have Academics, Practitioners and Graduates debate both sides of the arguments and talk about what matters most.
