R W 'Rich' Allen Workshop

In Pursuit of Mastery

“I’m a London Brit by birth, an Australian by choice, and I feel privileged to have this international identity”.

Back in the late 1960s, Rich Allen studied painting and drawing for five years, and graduated from the Central [now Central St Martins] School of Art. Following migration to Brisbane with his wife Ag in 1982, Rich practiced as a graphic designer, and corporate identity specialist [a service he defines as “differentiation by design”], returning to his fine art roots on a full-time basis, after much soul-searching, in late 2009.

Driven by process, Rich has recently accrued 16000 recorded hours of drawing practice, travelling a pathway of “perpetual exploration”. He continues: “My work has the single-minded theme of ‘INTIMISM’, striving to capture a moment”. Primarily working with the figure, his approach to practice is organized, and includes the structuring of grids, tilings and patterns, all of which set constraints. Through the “rhythm of mark making”, and the continual routine of ‘building’ layered components, Rich’s pictures gradually evolve, and finally assume their various repetitive shape and design.

Rich’s presentation verbalizes and visualizes the progress of his journey from its outset, and he concludes: “I believe that my work is about a disciplined and measured pursuit towards some sort of mastery. Enjoyment of pure practice is paramount to the process”.
