Understanding mental health in an indigenous context

Many of our clients suffer from mental health issues. This session will start off by looking at anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts as three common mental health problematics and identify associated signs and symptoms.

Upon completion of this session participants will be able to:

  • Understand the prevalence of mental health in an indigenous Australian context
  • Identify signs of anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts in clients
  • Work more effectively with indigenous clients in encouraging accessing professional help
  • Advocate more effectively on behalf of indigenous clients

This session is a continuation of the cultural awareness session that was run in March 2019 and will be delivered by AJ Williams-Tchen. He is of Wirdajuri / Wotjobulak background and has delivered over 600 cultural workshops across a broad range of sectors. He is a qualified nurse, youth worker, social worker and counsellor and has over 27 years’ experience in the health & community service sector.

To satisfy your professional obligations – and to be awarded points for attendance – you are required to participate in the entire session. We thank you for your commitment to our Code of Ethics.
