'Embracing Space'

Space is an intrinsic and ubiquitous element in providing built environments. Architecture however, mostly focusses on buildings and their philosophical and visual impacts. Instead I would like to focus on how space can contribute to the delivery of more fulfilling and inspiring places.

Space is a fundamental component of the natural environment and for our indigenous forebears, space constitutes a significant part of the narrative of life. As architects we are expected to manipulate space in conjunction with functional life to produce environments that respond to our client’s aspirations.

At a base level one dimensional plans are an expression of the relationship and integration of functional habits. More complex manipulations of space occur when dimensional, physical and psychological aspects are introduced in the search to provide a more holistic built solution.

It is possible to take a more inclusive view of how our buildings, our urban spaces, [including streets and squares] and the intervention with the natural environment could be conceived and successfully brought to more effective and delightful fruition.

We could, if we gave greater credence to space as the organising element in the design of built environments produce more fulfilling and stimulating places. Space should not be regarded as a negative factor in the design process. Space should be considered the primary element in the conception and delivery of Landscape Architecture, Urban Design and Architecture.
