Jane Austen’s Brush with the Law

Lawyer and President of the Jane Austen Society in Melbourne, Mercia Chapman, will enlighten us all on the 18th century laws that governed Jane Austen’s life and characters. The law was different in 1813 (when Pride & Prejudice was published) and entails were commonplace. Learn how the law of the day effected Jane Austen and her characters. Learn about the early 18th century legal profession, the legal cases her family were involved in and Mr Bennet’s daughters will not inherit Longbourne.
