Invenio - Luminesce & Clarion/Whisper

Invenio - Luminesce & Clarion/Whisper

WHAT: INVENIO is a large ensemble of improvising and contemporary singers who experiment and extend upon the typical vocal group or choral environment through conceptual composition, extended vocal technique, fluid improvising, choreographed movement and inventive performance.

Invenio’s latest work is a new collaboration with video artist Robert Jarvis that uses voices as triggers for lighting events.

Composed by Gian Slater, Luminesce explores a pattern orientated musical landscape derived from a visual perspective through Jarvis' software program, Voxstripe. Within the parameters of symmetry, form and velocity, the music ranges from intensely rhythmic to lush harmonic clusters, creating a different vocal ensemble landscape and performative environment.

Out of the darkness, sheets of colour and geometric shapes are projected onto each of the seven performers, activated and deactivated through every sound and every silence. Groupings of the performers emerge together as waves of light mirror the musical form, whilst always returning to the solo or unison voice, the spotlight or the blanket of illumination.

Robert Jarvis is a musician, video artist and creative coder based in Melbourne, Australia.  He produces and performs live audio-visual work, animated music videos and develops software for audio-visual performance and composition.  Recent work has included a dual-location timelapse Installation in Hobart and Melbourne as part of Dark MOFO and custom software written to control the Melbourne Town Hall pipe organ.  Robert is currently completing his Masters in Computing and is pursuing further research into augmented musical performance.

Clarion/Whisper is a collection of songs composed for the full Invenio's 16-voice ensemble. Since its inception in 2010, the group has focused primarily on wordless and extended vocal compositions creating a world of vocal sound that is rarely explored. This new song cycle explores text and song-form with an urgent, dynamic intensity that throws itself between minimalist unison and 8-part layered complexity; hushed text and extended pop exultation; clarion call and delicate whisper.

Clarion/Whisper premiered in November 2013 at the Northcote Town Hall and was performed again in March this year. For this show, there are 4 new songs to add to the song cycle, which will be recorded in July 2013.

Clarion/Whisper involved all 16 members of Invenio. It juxtaposed lead singing with lyrics against wordless singing. Sections of the group entered with different parts like the sections of an orchestra. The choir produced exquisite harmonies in a rich tapestry of sound that utilised vocal range and rhythmic density. Together, they brought out the complexity and the striking melodic contours of these rewarding compositions, compositions that are festival material’ The Age 2013
