Somatic Therapy - Skills for Working with the Body in Present Moment Time
This presentation will explore through case studies and a range of experiential experiences, the importance of observing and engaging with the body as part of a wholistic bottom up, top down approach.
Aspects of therapist embodiment and its impact on this work, how to track a client's experience, how to enhance interoceptive awareness through curiosity and mindfulness and how to link the thought sense with the felt sense will be explored in this highly experiential session.
Presenter: Shirley Hicks is a somatic psychotherapist and yoga teacher who has been practising for over 25 years. She has a Master of Counselling . Her somatic training was initially in Neo-Reichian techniques but her practice is also strongly influenced by Ron Kurtz the founder of Hakomi, Peter Levine, Babette Rothschild and the developmental somatic work of Ruella Frank. She has a specific interest in how traumatic events in life become part of the body’s story and the person’s experience.
Shirley operates a private psychotherapy and yoga practice on the Gold Coast and is the co-founder of Trauma Sensitive Yoga Australia- an organisation committed to promoting a discussion in both the yoga and wider mental health care community around trauma informed practices when working with clients recovering from trauma. Shirley is also facilitator with the BlueKnot foundation.
