Y CLASS SHUNTERS TOUR - Saturday 8th February 2020
hero
  • SATURDAY 8TH FEBRUARY 2020

Join Steamrail Victoria as we journey into the Suburbs of Melbourne and on the Ballarat Mainline, Hauled by two 1968 built Diesel Electric Shunting Locomotives.
Steamrail Victoria's resident yard pilot Y164 will be joined on a special mainline outing by V/Line's Y163.
Come along and experience the charm of vintage rail travel behind two locomotives rarely seen on the mainline.
Thanks to V/Line, Y163 is being relieved of its usual yard pilot duties at Southern Cross Station to join our heritage passenger train. This will be the first time in many years that Y163 has led a mainline passenger train.

  • After picking up passengers at Newport Station at 0815, we will arrive at Southern Cross Station and meet Y163 as it comes from its usual home at the Bank Sidings. After departure at 0925 the tour will first venture to Werribee, reminiscent of the days before electrification when Y classes regularly hauled Werribee services. After a short stop to run around at Werribee, the train will head east across the Flinders Street Viaduct and onto the Pakenham Line. A stop of just over an hour will take place for passengers to detrain and enjoy lunch in the shopping precinct of Oakleigh while the train heads to Westall Yard to run around again.

  • After lunch, the train will venture out of Melbourne's suburbs towards Bacchus Marsh. As the first heritage train on the newly upgraded Ballarat Line, you will see Victoria's newest station at Cobblebank and the new trackwork associated with the works. The train will also venture into the new Maddingley Stabling Yard outside of Bacchus Marsh. View where V/Line stores both locomotive hauled and Vlocity trains to cater for the increasingly busy commuter trains servicing Bacchus Marsh and Melton.

  • The train will return to Southern Cross Station at 4:30pm before the last stop at Newport Station at 5:15pm and heading back to Steamrail's Newport Workshops Depot.

  •

  • Please Note, The onboard kiosk will only be serving hot & cold drinks (Including alcoholic beverages) and a select range of snacks. Hot food will not be avaliable onboard the train due to the lunch break at Oakleigh. BYO food is welcome on board, BYO alcohol is prohibited.

  • Compartment Seating on sale until Saturday 18th January 2020. Pay for 6 seats in your own compartment, take up to 8 passengers!
