The Need for an Indigenous Cultural Boarding Standard

In 2017 the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Indigenous Affairs (HORSCIA) published The power of education: From surviving to thriving Educational opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. This report recognised the need for an Indigenous Cultural Boarding Standard that Indigenous families and many in the boarding sector had been calling for.

It is difficult to comprehend that in 2020 there are no specific standards to assure Indigenous families that their children’s boarding school is a culturally safe place, that the teachers and boarding staff are able to look after them professionally, provisioned to address individual health issues, respect and understand their culture and provide them with the education that will enable them to have the same opportunity as enjoyed by many of their age peers.

The Hon Warren Snowdon MP, Shadow Assistant Minister for Indigenous Australians, is a passionate advocate for Indigenous education and the needs for standards. As the deputy chair of the HORSCIA he heard the submissions for The power of education report and delivered the keynote at the 3rd National Indigenous Education & Boarding Symposium on the Need for a Standard.
