Animal Assisted Therapy
Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) has become more accessible in recent years, but what exactly is it? There are a range of different applications including therapeutic, emotional support and hippotherapy. This small group training session will cover off the purpose of animal assisted therapy, the evidence base and desired outcomes, funding sources and developing AAT into your own professional practice. This is a great session for anyone interested in exploring AAT for the benefit of their clients.
Presented by Talitha Clements who is an Occupational Therapist who works in Private Practice in WA. She is the director of Cornwall House OT which along with 10 other OT’s works with people with and without disabilities across the entire lifespan from infants to older age. Talitha is currently completing her PhD looking at children with visual impairment and their engagement in physical activities. Over the years she has completed certification as a Hippotherapist, a Horse Riding Coach with the Riding for the Disabled Association of Australia. Clinically her areas of practice currently encompass Complex Behaviour Management, Disability and Equipment Prescription. Talitha started an Animal-Assisted Therapy Program (one of only two) in WA approximately 2 years ago with therapy dog – Dash, in 2020 this expanded to include an Equine-Assisted Therapy program. In 2020, Talitha also joined up with Western Australian Assistance and Therapy Dogs a not-for-profit aimed to reduce barriers to people with disabilities and assist in people achieving their goals working alongside Assistance and Therapy Dogs.
