SAST
Presented by Blackfriars Performing Arts.
SAST tells the story of World War I soldier Alexander Sast, described by legendary journalist Keith Murdoch as the "bravest of the Anzac brave". The play, written and directed by Drama Teacher Bob Becker, also takes the audience to the tumultuous times leading up to the collapse of the Russian Empire. “Ultimately, this play is about identity,” Mr Becker says. “Is Australia ready to call the Odesa-born Sast, the legendary Anzac who fought in Gallipoli and the Western Front, an Australian icon?"
A play written and directed by Bob Becker, draws heavily on Daryl Kelly's Just Soldiers and Elena Govor's Falling Stars. The story of ANZACs from Ukraine.
With original music by Charli Holoubek and Bob Becker. Charli Holoubek has created a soundscape that draws on Turkish, Bulgarian and Ukrainian influences while the songs written by Becker and Holoubek are derivative of the cabaret style of The Tiger Lillies, Jacques Brel and Kurt Weill.
