We facilitate classes and untutored groups that participate in drawing and painting across a variety of mediums, supporting self expression, still life, landscape, life drawing and portraiture. John Orlando Birt, from the Twenty Melbourne Painters Society Inc., will be conducting a 1-day Watercolour Workshop: Italian Magical Light.
John is a celebrated en plein air painter who loves the adventure of discovering new locations to paint, as well as the challenges that plein air painting presents. He has lived in Italy through his work in industrial design and continues to travel there regularly, drawing inspiration from its landscapes, architecture, and light.
Step into the enchanting world of Italy in this Italian-themed workshop! Immerse yourself in the charm of sunlit buildings, sparkling waters, reflections, and boats gently bobbing in harbors.
Under John’s guidance, you will explore the concept of “Magical Light” – learning how to capture the shimmering quality of light as it dances across surfaces, buildings, and water. The workshop emphasizes creating your painting’s first impression through light, giving your compositions depth, mood, and a sense of wonder.
Whether you are a beginner or an experienced artist, you will enjoy a day of experimentation, practical guidance, and inspiration, leaving you with a painting full of Italian magic.

2026 Workshop - Ink, Pen and Wash 2 Days with It Hao Pheh
Workshop - 19 and 20 January 2026
This ink and watercolour course explores mostly urban scenes, benefiting those who admire buildings and cities. Based on basic material, the methods used, together with practice, will quickly enable you to develop creativity and imagination. Each course will be a different and educational experience, designed for you to achieve the best results in the shortest period. At the same time, studies of composition, perspective and figure work will be added in to form a wide understanding. Various techniques will be introduced and short demonstrations will be done throughout. This course will definitely improve your skills to bring the urban scenes to life.
This course will be a mix of plein air and studio, weather pending.
Please wear comfortable footwear, a hat, a chair and BYO drinks and lunch.

“The Beauty of Monochrome in Watercolour”
Maxine will be painting 2 demonstration subjects showing the use of monochrome painting in Watercolour.
Definition of monochrome: a picture in only black & white or varying tones of one colour. Maxine will demonstrate the use of a VALUE SCALE to enable the creation of a visually interesting image, where light and dark, shadow and form, textures and shape can be easily created with this method. She will show the use of a variety of brushes to enhance these features, whilst practicing the watercolour techniques that make her work her own.
Maxine will bring several examples of her work to illustrate the monochrome subject, showing the results of this method in a range of possible colours.
An afternoon tea will be provided.

2026 Workshop Tim Murphy - An Approach to Tonal Realism
11 July & 12 July 10.00am - 4.00pm
This workshop explores methods inspired by the Australian Tonalists (where patterns of light and dark are favoured over underdrawing) and is intended to give participants a grounding or an opportunity to advance skills in oil painting based on direct observation.
Held over two days, day one will focus on techniques for measuring and plotting, observing tonal shapes and establishing a hierarchy of edges. Day two will include a study of colour temperature and how to apply colour according to tonal order.
Participants can expect to gain an understanding of how to approach tonal painting logically, and it is hoped this knowledge can be used as a reference for further studies. The workshop also provides an opportunity to complete a finished work. All skill levels are welcome.

In this presentation Richard Impey will explore the application of Information Technology in the creation, development and presentation of art.
Digital technology lets you generate high-calibre artwork at a blistering pace using a robust layer’s system, stunning filters, and thousands of importable brushes. A must have for serious artists and enthusiasts alike’. Digital software like Procreate, Adobe Fresco, Corel Painter, Kitra and Sketchbook can be used to sketch ideas, create designs and produce finished artwork. Richard frequently reinterprets his Procreate art using different media such as printing and oil painting. He finds Procreate to be an essential resource for his art and his art practice as it is so easy to use, flexible and transportable.
In this presentation Richard will show how IT is integrated into his art practice.

2025 Tim Murphy - An Approach to Tonal Realism Workshop
Workshop - 22 and 29 June 2025
This workshop explores methods inspired by the Australian Tonalists (where patterns of light and dark are favoured over underdrawing) and is intended to give participants a grounding in oil painting based on direct observation.
Held over two consecutive Sundays, day one will focus on techniques for measuring and plotting, observing tonal shapes and establishing a hierarchy of edges. Day two will include a study of colour temperature and how to apply colour according to tonal order.
Participants can expect to gain an understanding of how to approach tonal painting logically, and it is hoped this knowledge can be used as a reference for further studies. The workshop also provides an opportunity to complete a finished work. All skill levels are welcome.

Lewis Miller is a highly regarded Melbourne based portraiture artist. Miller has a long list of awards including the Hugh Ramsay Portrait Prize (1981), the Archibald Prize (1998) as well as being shortlisted 19 times and the Sporting Portrait Prize (2000). Miller’s work is represented in private and public collections in Australia and overseas, including the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of New South Wales, National Gallery of Victoria, Australian War Memorial, Karolyi Foundation Vence and France Bibliotheque Nationale de France.

John is a celebrated En Plein Air Painter who enjoys the adventure of finding a new locations to paint as well as the challenge of En Plein Air. John has lived in Italy through his work in industrial design and continues to travels there regularly. John has a romantic lens on the Italian landscape.
This workshop is suitable for all skill levels. Topics covered include composition, design, translating a photo reference, tonal structure and colour harmony. This course consists of demonstrations and practice. A photo reference will be supplied, however students are able to bring own reference. A material list will be sent with course receipt. IWe all love to paint landscapes and seascapes…..and skies are a part of those compositions. Do you ever have trouble getting it to ‘look right’ or interesting enough? Do your clouds look fake? The weather of the sky influences what is happening in your painting – especially over water. It also creates mood and time of day…..as artists, we need to harness these things and implement them into our work – in a convincing and evocative way. Maxine will show you how to create more interesting and convincing skies in your watercolours…..and it’s all about TIMING! Certain watercolour techniques enable you to create great skies…..Maxine will show you how! Maxine will bring in examples of watercolour skies to show you, and to learn from. You will paint several paintings over the day and Maxine will provide you with compositions to work from.

Bayside Council is running an afternoon of music and entertainment in the gardens at Billilla Mansion, 26 Halifax Street Brighton on Saturday 13th of April and has generously asked Brighton Art Society to join in.
