Brighton Art Society is based in Brighton, Victoria, Australia. We welcome beginners and all skill level to join our art community. We facilitate classes and untutored groups that participate in drawing and painting across a variety of mediums, supporting self expression, still life, landscape, life drawing and portraiture. To join a tutored class or untutored group or more please register for membership for the current calendar year.

2024 Workshop Expressive Landscapes in Acrylic with Vivi
Sunday 2 June - 10am - 4.00pm
BAS 1 Day Workshop - Understanding Acrylics and how to paint expressive landscapes.
In this workshop, students will explore the characteristics of the acrylic medium and how to make the most of its unique properties to paint with energetic and expressive brush strokes. Students will be guided through two step by step painting subjects with demonstrations from Vivi.

This is an Introductory Course on Watercolour, and is suitable for absolute beginners and those who require a fresher in using this medium. IWe all love to paint landscapes and seascapes…..and skies are a part of those compositions. Do you ever have trouble getting it to ‘look right’ or interesting enough? Do your clouds look fake? The weather of the sky influences what is happening in your painting – especially over water. It also creates mood and time of day…..as artists, we need to harness these things and implement them into our work – in a convincing and evocative way. Maxine will show you how to create more interesting and convincing skies in your watercolours…..and it’s all about TIMING! Certain watercolour techniques enable you to create great skies…..Maxine will show you how! Maxine will bring in examples of watercolour skies to show you, and to learn from. You will paint several paintings over the day and Maxine will provide you with compositions to work from.

BAS En Plein Air at BILLILLA - Saturday April 13th

Bayside Council is running an afternoon of music and entertainment in the gardens at Billilla Mansion, 26 Halifax Street Brighton on Saturday 13th of April and has generously asked Brighton Art Society to join in.
Members are invited to join us in free En Plein Air painting and drawing session with an opportunity to enjoy the other activities on offer.
Entry is free
Event will run on Saturday between 12pm - 7pm.

Clive's first love of Watercolour commenced at Castlemaine Art Gallery where there was a beautifully romantic exhibition of R.W. Sturgess works.
During this workshop Clive will be working from his own photos where students will follow. The workshop will run from 10am to 4pm. An hour will be allocated for lunch. BYO Lunch or you can visit the small cafe down the road.

Fiona’s dramatic and captivating paintings are created with meticulous attention to detail and in accordance with Max Meldrum's visual order of appearances. Her understanding of colour and tone, her selection of beautiful subjects and her ability to capture the effects of light, breathes life into her work.
Fiona studied under John Balmain and developed a passion for portrait, still life and teaching.Students are introduced to techniques and methods studied by the master painters throughout history. Mediums include oil, charcoal, pencil and pastel.
Fiona is a member of the Twenty Melbourne Painters Society Inc. established in 1918.

I love colour and pattern, the freedom of line Van Gogh being my passion and influence.
In this workshop student will create a floral still life with ceramics and glass colour, pattern and line. The day will be Fun and free colour!

Janice is a talented Victorian artist with an art practice in Pearcedale, and enjoys working in dry pastel and oil. Janice’s recent solo exhibition in December 2022 was support by Creative Victoria.
Janice’s teaching objective is to help people to enjoy creating art, and to help artists to produce better art by teaching basic principles such as colour, design, tone, composition, and care and use of materials.

To capture the moment but also show that this moment is part of a continuum, with energy and tension even in images of still objects.
