Rock Academy 45 Live - The Next Generation of Rock Come and join the Tribe at a new venue for Rock Academy - MEMO Music Hall in St.Kilda. Rock Academy, featuring over 70 young musicians from all over Victoria (as well as some guests from NSW and WA), is a celebration of Rock, of Melbourne and of the infectious energy of youth. We’re excited to be in the incredible MEMO Music Hall for the first time, and after a week of preparing Melbourne’s brightest young musicians, they will blow you away. Rock Academy is a phenomenal school holiday program for teenage musicians. Mentored by professional touring musicians, the teenagers form bands, write songs and put on a show that needs to be seen to be believed. This October marks the fiftieth anniversary of Dave Warner’s from the Suburbs one of Australia’s most unique bands. `Suburban Boy’ Dave Warner, named by Bob Dylan as one of his favourite Australian artists, launched out of Perth with his 1972 proto-punk band Pus, then refined the concept into ‘suburban rock’ the Australian equivalent of Brit ‘kitchen-sink, angry young-man’ cinema. In the late 70s Dave Warner’s from the Suburbs crash-tackled a largely imitative Australian rock scene with unbridled energy and originality with album ‘Mugs Game’ going gold within eight weeks. Tracks like “Convict Streak’ and ‘Half Time at the Football’, precursors to rap, and sung in an Australian accent sliced and diced the country’s culture and led to Warner’s arrest for singing “obscene songs”. Now to celebrate that glorious era DWFTS come to MEMO Music Hall St Kilda, Sat Oct 17, for their only Melbourne appearance, with most of the original ‘Mugs Game’ Suburbs in the line-up and some special guests. For more than two hours Dave, Tony, Howie, Paul and a host of other musicians will perform material from Pus, through the Mugs Game, Free Kicks albums and beyond. Alma Zygier is bewitching and idiosyncratic. The Melbourne born jazz and blues performer brings grit and grime to her vocals. Playful and peculiar, Alma portrays her power and fragility simultaneously at every turn bringing an emotional maturity to her performance that belies her years. There is not a great tradition of rock royalty in this country but Alma Zygier, the first-born of Oz rock legends Deborah Conway and Willy Zygier, is up there among them. No Nepo baby, she has cut her teeth in a field left of the realm in which her parents are famous. Rather than a young rock goddess, after eight years as a professional performer, she has become a queen of blues and jazz, renowned for her interpretations of the classic repertoire and no stranger to it’s many hallowed halls and festivals. With a velvet voice that blends Billie Holiday with Minnie Riperton, her delivery is worldly-wise yet soft and sensitive, while her arrangements are quirky and cool, especially the horns. It’s not just her genes that set Zygier on the path to singing. Although her mother is a great mum, she is not much of a teacher but her father is. From an early age, Willy Zygier treated his daughter to his collection of classic jazz and blues, much of which now features in her performance. Zygier has earnt the respect of Australia’s pre-eminent singer/songwriter, Paul Kelly. Her recording of the 1930s jazz classic, What Are You doing New Year’s Eve?, closes Kelly’s 2021 Christmas album. Zygier responded in kind by inviting Kelly to sing at her Very Jewish Christmas how. (As Jewish people don’t celebrate Christmas, there’s a sly joke in that.) A show of Christmas songs written by Jewish people, he performed a stirring duet with Conway. Paul Kelly speaks eloquently of Zygier’s talents. “There is a difference between very good singers and great ones. It can be difficult to define, but for me, it has to do with a singer’s ability to inhabit a song, embody and believe it, and transmit that belief to the listener. Madder Lake played the '72, to '75 festivals and then went on to support the ”Rolling Stones” on their Australian '73 Tour later that year and were the first act to be signed to Mushroom Records - delivering the company their first Gold Record with the brilliant album ‘Still Point’. This album spawned the singles ‘12lb. Toothbrush’ and ‘Goodbye Lollipop’. Next, we have Mike Rudd’s Spectrum, arguably Australia’s most popular Progressive Rock Act. Spectrum’s Number One National Hit ‘I’ll Be Gone’, released a year earlier, had already become an anthem with the Australian public – it’s since been covered by Australian artists from John Williamson to Lost Ragas and internationally by Manfred Mann’s Earth Band. Mike was later to record at the famous Abbey Road Studios in England with another of his bands, Ariel, who controversially returned from the UK to play at the last Sunbury in '75. A documentary on Mike Rudd and Spectrum titled: I’LL BE GONE” after the Number One Hit Nationally of the same name was released in May 2026 - Directed by Chris Frankin and Featuring: Ross Wilson/ Brian Nankervis from Rockwiz/ Howard Gable Head Producer for EMI, (also produced the single).
