Paul Ham discusses 'The Soul' with Richard Fidler

Saturday 3 August 2024
Join us for a wide-ranging and fascinating discussion on history, humanity and The Soul. 'The Soul' is a history of the human mind, from the earliest expression of self-consciousness to its unshakeable belief in the great religions and political systems. Almost everyone thinks they have one, but nobody knows what it is. It could be saved, condemned, tortured, bought. And then, mysteriously, the 'soul' disappeared. The Enlightenment called it the 'mind'. In 'The Soul - A History of the Human Mind' critically acclaimed historian Paul Ham embarks on a journey that has never been attempted - to restore the idea of the soul to the human story and to show how belief in, and beliefs arising from, the soul/mind have animated and driven the history of humankind.

Tuesday 6 August 2024
Pulitzer Prize winning White House and National Security correspondent for The New York Times, David Sanger, is coming to Bookoccino to talk about his new book, New Cold Wars: China’s Rise, Russia’s Invasion, and America’s Struggle to Defend The West. “Painstakingly researched . . .a must-read,” says The Guardian. Sanger has covered Washington politics, economics and national security during seven presidents: Reagan; Bush; Clinton; Bush: Obama; Trump, Biden. Who does he think will be next, and what will the victory of either man mean for Australia? He will be in conversation with Jane Perlez, another Pulitzer Prize winning New York Times reporter — they were in the Washington bureau together for several years. She was the New York Times bureau chief in China from 2012-2019, and is host of the podcast Face-Off: U.S. vs China.
