Plein Air Down Under's Outdoor Painting Festival invites local, national and international artists to join in the fun of Western Australia's largest outdoor painting festival. The festival focusses on outdoor and evening paint outs, Feature Artist Masterclasses and Workshops, over $12,000 in prizes and awards, exhibitions, selling opportunities and youth involvement.

During this workshop we will focus on classic watercolour techniques with emphasis on understanding the crucial elements to rendering a successful image. Through some fun exercises we will explore how to simplify the scene and play with values, edges, colour and composition to enhance our interpretation of our chosen subjects and convey a sense of space, light and form. We will also explore some of the pitfalls of using watercolour outside and find solutions.

Leon will be teaching in oils, focusing on perspective and scale, lights and darks, tonal values, colour mixing and a myriad of oil painting tips and tricks.
After two daily demonstrations on how to capture a scene under constantly changing conditions, Leon will be assisting students individually.
Students with some experience in oil painting will get the most out of this workshop, but if you have been painting for years and feel your work needs a new direction, you will also love it.

Drawing is the foundation of visual art and it can be easier than you think.
Join award-winning artist Andy Dolphin for this full day studio workshop covering the
basics of sketching en Plein Air. Topics covered include simplifying the landscape,
handling perspective and finding successful compositions through tonal thumbnails.
Andy will also introduce students to a simple sketching method he calls Mindful Contour
Drawing which he uses for urban sketching or to produce preliminary drawings for
watercolour painting. The session will also include some Plein Air drawing exercises.
While the lesson is aimed primarily at painters, the methods used will also suit artists
simply wanting an introduction to plein air drawing and urban sketching.

In this two-day masterclass, learn the power of creating thumbnail studies from a limited palette of the primary colours, plus white. When painting en plein air, you want to bring the least amount of supplies as possible, and stripping down your colours is a great way to practice the fundamentals of colour mixing while still getting a wide range of colour variation and values. Using less colours can actually be more freeing; you are forced to be more creative with the limited options you have.

QUICK DRAW TWO HOUR PAINTING COMPETITION

The Quick Draw is a fun, high energy painting and drawing event for all ages and levels of creativity. Artists have two hours to complete their work, which will then be judged and presented for sale to the general public.
From 2 – 4pm on Saturday 26 September, Quick Draw artists paint en plein air around the Mandurah Terrace CBD including the eastern foreshore from the Rotunda to the Boardwalk precinct and Mandjar Square to Mandurah Boat and Bike Hire. A map will be provided.

Working tonally, Leon will demonstrate and teach the basics of working en plein air, in oils.
